A few months back I moved my blog to Octopress, hosted on Github Pages. And while many people enjoy the flexibility of Octopress/Jekyll, I found it to be counterproductive.
I spend my weeks at university, and only my weekends at home. My laptop’s with me most of the time, but it’s not really practical to pull it out whenever I have an idea for a blog post. I like writing and posting things from my iPhone/iPad, and that’s just a huge hassle to do using Octopress. Tumblr and Byword make it extremely easy. If I have something to share, I just write it down, press publish, and that’s it. Hassle-free. Easy. Fast. Which is how it should be today.
I’m not saying it’s not possible to set up Octopress in a way that makes it easy to post from wherever, but I just don’t have the time and patience to set it up. I’m not a writer, not even close. I’m just a guy who enjoys sharing some thoughts every now and then. Tumblr makes that easy to do.
